What are the best growing conditions for Oat Seeds?

Feed oats can tolerate heavy, wet soils but they are generally more sensitive to the cold than other small grains. Oats can be used for pasture, hay and silage and can be planted at 60 lbs. to 90 lbs. of seed per acre. There are many varieties of oat seeds available. All of our oat seed varieties come in 50lbs. bags.

Florida 501

This is a good grazing oat with wide leaves and good tillering ability. This variety matures early and is best adapted to the coastal plains. It is resistant to Victoria blight, moderately resistant to soil-borne mosaic and shows some tolerance to barley yellow dwarf virus. If crown rust is absent, Florida 501 gives high yields of good quality yellow grain.

Horizon 270

Co-developed by the University of Florida and Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, this is a new winter oat variety that has good potential for grain, forage, conservation tillage and wildlife purposes in the southern US states. It is short to medium height and has excellent grain yield, good straw strength and is resistant to crown and stem rust.

Horizon 474

A winter oat variety that has potential for both grain and forage production in the south eastern US states. It produces high yields of excellent test weight grain, is early maturing and has good crown rust resistance. Horizon 474 has been co-developed by the University of Florida and the University of Georgia.

Coker 227

A good fall and winter food source for deer and other wildlife. A high yielding, crown rust, mildew and mosaic resistant variety which is winter hardy and grows to medium height. Has a high test weight, good straw of medium height and resists lodging. Plant 64lbs. to 120 lbs per acre drilled.
